Jan Bell: Little Red Hen

68 Jay St Bar Live Music Schedule

Posted on January 28, 2011
Americana, Alt. Country, Roots, Folk Blues,
Old time, Vintage Jazz.
'Much as a lot of New York clubs exploit musicians, there are other venues that actually support and nurture scenes: Barbes, with its global talent base; the Jalopy’s oldtime Americana roots crew; punk rock at ABC No Rio; jazz at Smalls. Count 68 Jay St. Bar in Dumbo on this short but crucial list. If Jan Bell (a poignant and potent Americana singer and tunesmith herself) has booked a band for one of the bar’s Wednesday and Saturday night shows, that’s a guarantee that the music will be good.' Ten years or so ago Nebraska native Melissa Carper and Yorkshire lass Jan Bell sat on a bench in the heart of Eureka Springs, Arkansas singing old time country songs. They were soon on the road, spending Winter playing the streets of New Orleans. Over the years, they came home to Eureka, opening for Emmylou Harris, Odetta, and playing the long running Ozark Folk Festival. As the rhythm section for their New Orleans pal, Opal Fly, they also opened for Ray Charles.
A few years later, they returned to Jan's adopted hometown of New York City - where they met up with fiddle player Katy Cox. Despite being based in three different states,(AR, NY, TX) the three had a busy few years. In 2009, they played Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, and folk festivals in the UK. They also went back to where it all began, Eureka Springs to headline their own show at The AUD. Thousands of miles [...]
